Easter Presents: Bach’s “St Matthew Passion by Macao Orchestra

On April 12, A must-experience before Easter! Under the baton of Masato Suzuki, principal conductor of Chorus of Bach Collegium Japan, Macao Orchestra will join forces with renowned vocalists for a powerful performance of Bach’s masterpiece, St. Matthew Passion, at the Macau Cathedral.

Rooted in the story of Jesus’ Passion from the Gospel of Matthew, this work masterfully depicts the arrest, trial, crucifixion, and burial of Jesus through profound musical expression. Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach, revered as the “Father of Classical Music,” the piece utilizes dual choruses and orchestras to create a monumental soundscape and intense dramatic tension, cementing its status as an enduring masterpiece in the history of music. The chorus from the Japan Bach Collegium will take on the roles of the crowd and various characters, joined by soloists portraying Jesus, Judas, Peter, the disciples, the Evangelist, Pontius Pilate, and other iconic figures from the Gospel of Matthew. Together, they will bring the biblical narrative to life through a powerful musical retelling.
